Installation and fitting of HVAC equipment in Barcelona
Air Conditioner Installation: What You Need to Know Before Installation
HVAC-Barcelona provides professional air-conditioning installation services in Barcelona and throughout Catalonia. A high-quality installation involves more than securely mounting the units. It also requires proper routing of the connections, safe electrical work, and compliance with the manufacturer’s technical requirements.
To carry out the work safely and efficiently, our specialists need information about the property and its existing utilities.
What should you tell the installer before work begins?
Before installation, the customer should indicate:
where the equipment can be connected to the electrical supply;
where condensate water may be discharged;
where concealed electrical wiring is located;
the location of electrical panels, sockets, and junction boxes;
the routes of water, heating, and drainage pipes;
any other concealed utilities inside walls, ceilings, or structural elements.
If you have technical drawings of the property or photographs taken during renovation work, please provide them to the installation team before drilling begins.
Why is this information important?
During installation, technicians drill through walls, install mounting brackets, and route refrigerant pipes, drainage lines, and electrical cables.
If the locations of concealed utilities are unknown, there is a risk of damaging electrical wiring, water pipes, or other services hidden inside the structure.
Our installers follow safety requirements and assess the work area beforehand. However, without technical drawings, detection equipment, or information from the property owner, it may not be possible to identify the exact location of every concealed utility.
Responsibility for concealed utilities
The customer must inform the installation team about any concealed utilities they know about.
If this information is not provided and a concealed utility that could not be visually identified is damaged during installation, the customer will be responsible for the repair costs. The installation team cannot be held responsible for damage to unknown utilities that were not identified before work began.
Professional Air-Conditioning Installation by HVAC-Barcelona
HVAC-Barcelona specialises in the sale, selection, and installation of climate-control equipment. Our technicians have professional experience in Russia, Ukraine, and Spain. We comply with technical standards and adapt every installation to the specific characteristics of the property.
Correct installation directly affects the efficiency, safety, and service life of an air conditioner.
What is included in a standard split-system installation?
An installation is considered standard when the following conditions are met:
the distance between the indoor and outdoor units does not exceed 3 metres;
the working height does not exceed 3 metres;
no complex construction work or specialist work at height is required;
condensate can be drained naturally by gravity;
the equipment can be installed without lifting platforms, scaffolding, cranes, or rope-access technicians.
Main stages of installation
1. Installing the outdoor unit
Our technicians:
select a safe and suitable installation location;
secure the brackets to the façade, balcony, or another appropriate structure;
install and securely fasten the outdoor unit;
provide sufficient space for ventilation and future servicing.
2. Installing the indoor unit
This work includes:
marking the installation position;
attaching the mounting plate;
levelling the indoor unit;
checking that condensate can drain correctly.
3. Installing the connections
The following connections are installed between the two units:
copper pipes for the refrigerant circuit;
thermal insulation;
a condensate drain pipe;
electrical and interconnection cables.
A hole of the required diameter is drilled through the wall to route the connections. The drainage pipe is installed with the correct slope so that condensate can flow away naturally.
4. Connection and commissioning
Once the equipment has been installed, our technicians carry out:
flaring and connection of the copper pipes;
inspection of all connections;
evacuation of the refrigerant circuit with a vacuum pump;
removal of air and moisture from the system;
opening of the outdoor unit’s service valves;
a test run;
checks of the cooling, heating, drainage, and main operating modes.
Evacuating the system with a vacuum pump is an essential part of professional installation. Starting the system without completing this procedure can reduce efficiency and cause premature compressor damage.
Materials included in a standard installation
A standard installation may include:
up to 3 metres of copper piping;
thermal insulation for the pipes;
up to 4 metres of drainage pipe;
up to 3 metres of interconnection cable;
brackets for the outdoor unit;
the necessary fixing materials;
up to 3 metres of decorative protective trunking.
The exact list of materials is determined after assessing the installation site and is agreed with the customer in advance.
HVAC-Barcelona provides a 6-month warranty on installation work. The equipment warranty is provided by the manufacturer under its own terms and conditions.
Additional Work for Non-Standard Installations
If the property does not meet the conditions for a standard installation, additional materials and work may be required.
1. Extending the refrigerant line
If the distance between the indoor and outdoor units exceeds 3 metres, each additional metre of the refrigerant line is charged separately.
Additional refrigerant is not added automatically. It is added only when required by the manufacturer’s technical specifications for the particular model. The maximum pipe length covered by the factory refrigerant charge varies between different units.
2. Additional drilling
The price may change if it is necessary to:
drill several holes;
pass through an unusually thick wall;
drill through reinforced concrete, stone, or other difficult materials;
enlarge the diameter of an existing hole;
use specialist drilling equipment.
3. Routing connections in difficult conditions
The following are considered additional work:
concealed installation of the connections;
cutting channels into walls and subsequently making them good;
working inside suspended ceilings;
installation on difficult-to-access façades;
use of scaffolding, lifting platforms, cranes, or rope-access technicians;
work performed at a height of more than 3 metres.
Work above 3 metres is subject to an additional charge. The cost of specialist machinery or access equipment is calculated separately.
4. Installing a condensate pump
If condensate cannot be discharged naturally by gravity, a condensate pump must be installed.
Condensate pump installation starts from €230. The final price depends on the pump model, its location, and the complexity of the drainage route.
5. Removing or relocating existing equipment
Replacing or relocating an air conditioner may require:
recovering and storing the refrigerant inside the outdoor unit;
disconnecting the equipment;
removing the indoor and outdoor units;
dismantling the existing pipework;
preparing the equipment for reinstallation;
installing the air conditioner in its new location.
6. Diagnosis and repair of the refrigerant circuit
Additional work may include:
refrigerant leak detection;
leak-tightness testing;
pressure testing with nitrogen;
re-flaring pipe connections;
brazing copper pipes;
replacing damaged sections of pipework;
evacuating the system;
charging the system with refrigerant.
The need for these services and their cost are agreed with the customer before any additional work is carried out.
Why is compliance with installation standards important?
Even a high-quality air conditioner may work incorrectly if mistakes are made during installation.
Improper installation can lead to:
refrigerant leaks;
reduced cooling or heating capacity;
compressor overload;
water leaking from the indoor unit;
unpleasant odours;
increased noise levels;
damage to electrical components;
a shorter service life for the equipment.
HVAC-Barcelona technicians use professional tools and quality materials, evacuate the refrigerant circuit correctly, and test the system before handing it over to the customer.
What is the difference between removing and recycling an air conditioner?
Removal
Removal means taking the air conditioner down from its installed position.
Depending on the situation, the work may include:
recovering the refrigerant into the outdoor unit;
disconnecting the equipment from the power supply;
disconnecting the pipework and cables;
removing the indoor and outdoor units;
removing the pipes, drainage line, and electrical cables.
After removal, the equipment remains the customer’s property and, if it is in suitable condition, can be installed again.
Recycling
Recycling means transferring the removed equipment to an authorised waste-management company for safe treatment or disposal.
Specialised companies with the necessary authorisations are responsible for:
collecting the equipment;
safely extracting and handling the refrigerant;
separating metal, plastic, electronic, and other components;
processing and recycling waste in accordance with environmental regulations.
Removing an air conditioner does not automatically include its collection or recycling.
Preliminary Installation Cost Assessment
Before installation, an HVAC-Barcelona specialist can visit the property to:
inspect the premises;
determine the most suitable locations for the units;
check the proposed pipework and drainage routes;
assess access to the façade;
calculate the required materials;
identify any additional work;
prepare a final quotation.
If the customer subsequently orders the installation from HVAC-Barcelona, the site-visit fee may be deducted from the total installation price. If the customer decides not to proceed, the visit and professional consultation must be paid for.
A free preliminary assessment can also be carried out without a site visit. To receive one, the customer should provide photographs or videos showing:
the proposed location of the indoor unit;
the wall and planned route of the connections;
the proposed location of the outdoor unit;
the façade, balcony, or roof;
the nearest electrical connection points;
the proposed condensate discharge point.
Any quotation prepared from photographs or videos is preliminary. The final price is confirmed after the actual conditions at the property have been verified.
